Avenant is the human suitor, also played by Marais. He is also a hunter as Actaeon was. It is an exploration of the transformative power of love, which can create and save beasts of men. As the prince says: Love can turn a man into a beast.
But love can also make an ugly man handsome. In the press-book which accompanied the premier of La Belle et la Bete in America inCocteau states: The Beast was framed in such a saccharine light that his loss is felt even though he has returned a triumphant man. There is an analogy of this within the film. Avenant and the Beast represent the superego and ID at different times in the film, never occupying the same space, and the final coupling of the two culminates in the Prince Charming figure.
Freudian imagery appears in much of the sexual subtext also. As Belle awaits her first introduction to the Beast, he moves in silence and approaches her from behind. She senses his presence, and toys suggestively with the knife on the table. The image of a scared woman playing with a phallic object burns with both desire and fear, excitement and anxiety.

The sexual imagery is important to her character arc. She beseeches her father: The Beast looked really bad. This movie was like watching a director trying to mimic Peter Jackson and Tim Burton making a Beauty and the Beast movie sans the point of the story. I do not buy for one instant that these two fell in love.
There was a scene where they were marginally nice to each other but is that love? Apparently is it because next time they see each other they are in love and voila spell is broken. But because this movie wanted to have like a mysterious backstory it takes away interactions with the the two leads and as a result I have no clue for the characters. Vincent Cassel as the Beast in Human form So because this movie made a decision to have an intricate backstory, how it?
So unlike other Beasts that are either jerks or walking a thin line between animal and humanity, this beast is a jerk to Belle because he killed his wife accidentally? And why would the Forest God turn him into a Beast to find love when it was in payment for killing his daughter?
That makes zero sense as a revenge punishment. Why give him an out that leads to happiness? And why did the God turn him into a Beast and then seem to help him in fight at the end? I know she was the one sending Belle the dreams but why? Plus, the plot turns did not move the story well to important scenes. One scene in particular bothered me.
This happened as Beast ran after Belle over a sheet of ice. He proceeded to yell at her and move in to kiss her while pinning her down. She laid their in a haze of terror, or perhaps primal attraction then. I have to wonder who changed her.
When I watched this I thought. I thought he was a perve and she a helpless, idiotic female. Truthfully, it was one of the most beautifully shot, ridiculous scenes I have ever seen. I had other problems with its execution. There were some scenes that I thought were wholly unnecessary. Also, the end battle was uneeded filler. All in all, this movie does not have the makings of a well paced and shot film.
No, that was not the problem.
The performances and chemistry of the characters did not work. In fact, I felt completely detached from any of the main characters. Belle did not deliver as either a graceful and kind lady or an intelligent, mature woman.

Truthfully, this actress did a phenomenal job in this role. With his physical transformation no one expected him to change. In fact, I do not think he had even considered reforming himself after all those years. When he lived with his former love, he pawed no pun intended her and kissed her every chance he got even if he was in front of others. So much for propriety.

Then again, this is a French film. Heck, he even let her go at his own expense with no intention of making her return, though it broke his heart. He reformed from a spoiled prince into an aspiring king.
